OPERATION HADIN KAI FOILS TERRORIST EXTORTION OPERATION, NEUTRALISES SUSPECT AND RECOVERS WEAPONS IN YOBE
Troops of Sector 2, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have disrupted a suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP extortion operation in Yobe State, neutralising one terrorist and recovering weapons, ammunition, and logistics items during an intelligence led operation aimed at dismantling the group's funding network.
According to military authorities, the operation followed credible intelligence indicating that suspected terrorists travelling in two Volkswagen Golf vehicles and several motorcycles were moving towards communities to collect illegal levies from residents.
Acting on the intelligence, troops from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bukarti, working alongside personnel of the 27 Task Force Brigade, deployed on a fighting patrol to the Paya Kafiya axis on 19 July 2026.
On making contact, troops engaged the terrorists in a gun battle, successfully immobilising one of the Volkswagen Golf vehicles. The driver was neutralised during the exchange, while four other suspected terrorists reportedly abandoned the vehicle and escaped into nearby bushes with gunshot wounds after coming under sustained military fire.
Follow up exploitation operations conducted the following day along the Paya Kafiya to Garin Gada axis led to the recovery of the abandoned vehicle, 25 rounds of belted PKT ammunition, one loaded AK 47 magazine, 15 empty PKT ammunition cases, assorted medications including paracetamol and nicotine products, as well as mechanical tools believed to have supported terrorist logistics.
From a security research perspective, the operation demonstrates a growing emphasis on targeting the economic infrastructure that sustains insurgent organisations. Rather than relying solely on external financing, Boko Haram and ISWAP have increasingly generated revenue through illegal taxation, extortion, kidnapping for ransom, livestock theft, and the forced collection of levies from vulnerable rural communities under their influence.
Disrupting these revenue streams is strategically important because it limits the ability of terrorist groups to procure weapons, acquire supplies, compensate fighters, and sustain prolonged operations. Counterterrorism campaigns that simultaneously target combat formations and financial networks generally impose greater operational pressure on insurgent groups than kinetic operations alone.
The recovery of ammunition, logistics supplies, and support equipment also offers valuable intelligence opportunities. Forensic examination of recovered materials may assist investigators in tracing supply routes, identifying procurement networks, and linking suspects to previous attacks or criminal activities.
Operation HADIN KAI stated that the latest operation further reflects the effectiveness of intelligence led offensive operations designed to dismantle terrorist logistics, deny insurgents freedom of movement, and disrupt illicit funding mechanisms across the North East.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining coordinated operations with other security agencies while encouraging members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information capable of supporting ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
