OPERATION FANSAN YAMMA RESCUES 27 KIDNAP VICTIMS, FOILS ABDUCTION ATTEMPTS ACROSS SOKOTO AND ZAMFARA
Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY), have recorded another series of operational successes against terrorist groups in the North West, rescuing 27 kidnapped victims, frustrating multiple abduction attempts, and recovering livestock and motorcycles during coordinated operations in Sokoto and Zamfara States.
According to military authorities, troops of the Forward Operating Bases at Shagari and Sifawa acted on credible intelligence on 20 July 2026 and deployed to Wanke and Kaura communities in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State following reports of terrorist activities.
On reaching Kaura community, troops encountered the terrorists and engaged them in a firefight. Faced with superior military firepower, the attackers fled the area, abandoning six kidnapped victims who were rescued unharmed. Troops also recovered rustled livestock and two motorcycles believed to have been used during the operation. The rescued victims were later reunited with their families.
In another operation on the same day, troops operating in Gandi, working alongside the State Security Community Guard Corps, rescued ten kidnapped victims who had escaped from their captors and were found wandering through the bush around Badanma community in Gandi Local Government Area. The victims, comprising men, women, and children, were safely handed over to community leaders before being reunited with their relatives.
On 21 July 2026, troops of Combat Team 12 responded to a distress call after suspected terrorists reportedly blocked the Gummi to Sokoto highway in an attempt to abduct travellers. Troops swiftly engaged the attackers, forcing them to abandon the operation. Eleven kidnapped persons were rescued during the pursuit, while one motorcycle was recovered.
From a security research perspective, the operations illustrate the continued reliance of terrorist and armed criminal groups on kidnapping as a source of financing and coercion. Road ambushes, community raids, and opportunistic abductions remain common tactics used to generate ransom payments, intimidate rural populations, and undermine freedom of movement across parts of the North West.
The operations also demonstrate the value of rapid response capabilities and intelligence driven deployments. In each instance, timely information enabled security forces to intervene before the attackers could consolidate control over their victims or withdraw to remote hideouts. Such interventions not only save lives but also disrupt the operational cycle of kidnapping networks by denying them financial rewards and freedom of movement.
Another notable feature of the operations is the collaboration between military personnel and local security structures, including the State Security Community Guard Corps. Cooperation between formal security agencies and vetted community based security organisations can improve situational awareness, accelerate response times, and strengthen public confidence in ongoing counterterrorism and counter banditry efforts.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA commended its troops for their professionalism and vigilance while acknowledging the contribution of members of the public whose timely intelligence supported the successful operations. The Joint Task Force reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining offensive operations aimed at dismantling terrorist and criminal networks across the North West and encouraged residents to continue providing credible information to security agencies.
